THE ENGLISH CEMETERY IN GIBRALFARO
by José Manuel Ruíz Castillo
1816, Málaga. British Consul William Mark takes up his new post after serving in the Royal Navy. One night, he watches in horror as a fellow countryman is buried on the beach, in a grave dug vertically and “feet first”.
This story, based on real events, is a journey through death and one person’s struggle to establish Spain’s first Protestant cemetery, in a country rife with deep-seated religious prejudice where Protestants and those who have taken their own lives are treated as heretics, and where they are not permitted to be buried in ‘holy ground’.
