A high proportion of the future PhD graduates who have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tesisdoctoralesonline.com\/en\/thesis-printing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their theses printed with our assistance<\/a><\/strong> have opted for this approach, as it is the one best suited to their field of research. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Before embarking on any dissertation project, students should consider the <strong>differences between qualitative and quantitative research<\/strong>, as well as which approach best suits their needs, in order to make the most of every step they take in their work.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All scientific work seems to be linked to figures and data that are impossible to refute: statistics, reviews of historical cases, patient counts\u2026 These elements fall within the scope of what is known as quantitative research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, not all situations can be objectively quantified. This is where qualitative research comes in, which refers to cases where situations that cannot be reduced to numbers are analysed. <strong>These scenarios<\/strong> <strong>require a more critical approach<\/strong>, as they involve analysing concepts, behaviours or situations involving thousands of variables. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today we\u2019ll explain what qualitative research is used for and what its general characteristics are, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of this approach in the scientific field.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_features_of_qualitative_research\"><\/span><strong>Key features of qualitative research<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The characteristics of qualitative research provide an even better understanding of what this type of subjective research\u2014which is generally associated with the social sciences\u2014entails.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Exploring the why, the what and the how: qualitative research focuses on the underlying causes of the phenomena under study and the responses to them, rather than on the phenomena themselves or how they occur.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A flexible approach<\/strong>: circumstances may necessitate changes to the research method, the way data is collected, and even the study\u2019s objectives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Participation and interaction<\/strong>: qualitative research requires the researcher to play an active role; they cannot remain detached from the events as a mere observer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Qualitative_research_methods\"><\/span><strong>Qualitative research methods<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The characteristics highlighted in the previous section mean that qualitative research must be conducted in accordance with very specific protocols.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In most cases, <strong>methods such as in-depth interviews<\/strong>\u2014which allow for open and reflective responses\u2014focus groups, involving discussions among the various participants; or participant observation, where the researcher becomes part of the lives of the research subjects, are used.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advantages_and_disadvantages_of_qualitative_research\"><\/span><strong>Advantages and disadvantages of qualitative research<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like any research methodology, qualitative research also presents a number of advantages and disadvantages for those writing a doctoral thesis:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" width=\"566\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Qualitative research<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"283\"><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"283\">Disadvantages<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"283\">Flexibility in developing strategies.<\/td>\n<td width=\"283\">Difficulties in objectively analysing information and drawing conclusions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"283\">It focuses on the \u2018whys\u2019 behind certain phenomena, which is ideal for social, ethnographic or psychological research.<\/td>\n<td width=\"283\">The researcher\u2019s subjectivity can result in data being manipulated unconsciously.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"283\">It offers a wide range of data collection methods that are more flexible and easier for research participants to accept.<\/td>\n<td width=\"283\">Analysing the data obtained is a lengthy and complex process.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"283\">It is the best approach for topics that have been little researched or are largely unknown.<\/td>\n<td width=\"283\">There is always a degree of unconscious influence exerted by the researcher on the subject under investigation, particularly in the case of social studies.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_points_for_using_qualitative_research\"><\/span><strong>Key points for using qualitative research<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most people who have chosen to have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tesisdoctoralesonline.com\/en\/thesis-binding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their doctoral thesis bound and printed<\/a><\/strong> by us and who have conducted quantitative research agree on certain key factors that have been essential to the successful completion of their work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Generally speaking, <strong>they focus on highlighting the importance of choosing the right analytical tool<\/strong>.
